⏱️INTRODUCTION⏱️

Hello intrepid listener! Thank you for listening to PINCH, the first compilation release by Tin Mitt Records. If you don’t already know, every single track on PINCH is ~exactly~ one minute long (1:00). This was the only constraint/prompt given to participants (along with the title) and everyone responded to it in vastly different ways. I could not possibly be more grateful to all of the artists who submitted work to this album! Of course it wouldn’t exist without everyone’s tracks, but it wouldn’t be so incredible without everyone’s tracks being really really cool.. I highly recommend that you listen to the full album in its entirety without skipping tracks because these artists made brand new original tracks specifically for this compilation. Take breaks if you need to. Heck, download it and put it on shuffle or make up your own track order if you want!

This album took a little over a year from the time of conception to release. A lot of that time delay was due to me getting COVID for the first time literally on the day of the submission deadline, which took me several months to recover from... and then a year of long covid screwing up my executive functioning.. But hey!! We did it! Oof!

PINCH was primarily written and recorded March 2022 - June 2022 by many many artists. Most of the artists on this album are from occupied Piscataway land known colonially as Baltimore MD, but there’s a handful of contributors from all around the globe. Not all of the artists on this album are queer but the majority of them are, and yknow what? like half of them are trans. So that's pretty cool.

Anyway. Thank you. Please enjoy this absurd album. We all worked hard on it.

THE BENEFITS OF
A 1:00 SONG LIFESTYLE

PINCH was directly inspired by both The Commercial Album (by The Residents, 1980) and Whack World (by Tierra Whack, 2018), both of which are entirely made up of minute-long songs. It wasn't until part-way through production of PINCH that an album contributor also introduced me to Morgan Fisher's Miniatures compilations (1980, 2000).

I first adapted that idea of a hard time limit into a FROGSMOG album full of 100-second-long songs (currently unreleased). Through that process, I found that having a short arbitrary time limitation allowed me to really focus in sharply on a single idea. There's no room to aimlessly wander off, and no room to slowly establish or build up things. The essence of the song gets compressed and becomes highly potent. Anything added to the song becomes equally as important as every other part. No part really fades into the background - everything is highly present. It's a very satisfying way to approach songwriting and I wanted to share this joy with others by forcing them to adhere to a strict time limit.

The benefits a one (1) minute long song compilation are clear. New, less-experienced artists are given an easy goal to work towards. More experienced artists can make something without worrying about larger albums and overarching projects. Everyone on this album is on the same level playing field. Everyone gets the exact same time in the spotlight. A 1:00 song is sturdy. A 1:00 stands strong on its own, but even stronger amongst its kin. Every track is in constant conversation with every other track and together they build the world of PINCH.

You could, if you wish, see this theme and time limit as a commentary or reflection on any number of big thematic aspects about the world we currently live in --- the way time is used as a tool of oppression, endless short-form social media feeds, the attention economy, the constant sense of urgency that capitalism manifests (the ol' "hustle n bustle"), the ticking clock of global disasters, infinite growth and excess consumption, planned obsolescence, maximalism vs minimalism, and even death ("the final time limit"). In all honesty, when I started this project, I mostly just thought making everyone write a 1:00 song would be funny (I was right). However, many artists DID use the prompt to reflect on these larger themes and so many more. And WOW I thank them for it. They gave this silly little gimmick a depth I would have never imagined on my own. I think in the end, this album is so many things, because it was made by so many people. Please attribute any interpretation to this album that you feel is fitting.

Don't forget to stop and smell the one minutes.

How did the time limit effect your songwriting?
"Had to ditch my original concept of having an A-B-A structure with a part that repeated. And so I streamlined it and introduced textural variations instead."

Did you incorporate the theme of "pinch"?
"Yes, in the title obviously, but also tried to use filters and compressors strategically to get the feeling of pinches."

What's the coolest thing you've ever done in under a minute?
"I got to go behind the scenes at the Aquarium and feed a baby sloth. I think it took about a minute. Does that count? :)"

How did the time limit effect your songwriting?
"Skimmed a little off the top so the higher-ups wouldn't notice - had to cut some beats and turn a 7/4 section into a 6/4 section. (I am the higher-ups (and I noticed))."

Any other thoughts?

"In alchemy, alkahest was a theoretical "universal solvent" that could break down anything into its core elements. The entire process of writing this song was not too unlike an alchemical process. And in a sense, while writing this song I learned how to break down various musical aspects into their core elements. I can see the code in the Matrix and I don't know if I can go back.

(Okay, feel free to SKIP THIS PART)
Deep wizard-brained THEORY ANALYSIS for the true freaks: The beginning is just in Ab dorian (the second mode of Gb major). But in the second half, the song goes through several mode changes. Essentially, each time there's a new chord in the chord progression, it acts as an anchor and tonal center for a new mode/scale that the melody and bass follow. This is directly influenced by jazz theory techniques (particularly chord-scale theory) Some of these modal changes happen fluidly, before their associated chord. It was all written linearly. Listen for Greg's autoharp for the chords (thanks again Greg for letting me steal a little Moth Broth magic). Meter-wise the first section is in 4/4, the second switches back and forth between 6/4 and 4/4 and by the end it all melds into 6/4.

The chord progression (and modes):
Abm (Ab dorian) B (B lydian) Gb (Gb lydian) Ab (Ab mixolydian)
Ebm7 (Eb dorian) Bbm (Bb phrygian b4) Bm (Bb harmonic major) Db (Db mixolydian).
You could also think of it as just 3 key changes instead (Ab dorian, Ab mixo, Bb phrygian b4) or something.

How did the time limit effect your songwriting?
"It was a really quick turnaround between coming up with the lyrics and producing the finished song. A lot of my songs are around that length anyway. it's fun to do it quick and dirty."

Did you incorporate the theme of "pinch"?
"Monstro was written after reading a comic, I Want To Be A Monster by Wendy Xu. The crux is essentially that trans people are going to be demonized anyway so we might as well lean into it. It's a pinch in that we're forced into these positions, made to feel monstrous, and so we become monstrous."

What's the coolest thing you've ever done in under a minute?

Pinch of poison is too much

Curving Tooth is a recent collaboration between artists and musicians Liz Downing (of Lambs Eat Ivy, Radiant Pig, Mole Suit Choir) and Greg Hatem (of Natural Velvet, Moth Broth).

Their debut LP Curving Tooth is a collection of surrealist folk songs originally composed by Liz in various former bands and projects from the 1980s - 2000s, now reimagined with new production and harmonic context. The songs describe images and scenes from dreams, waking life, and every space in between. Many of the instruments on the record are built from samples of Liz's voice and banjo, altered and re-performed to create new environments.

Runtime: 1:00
Written by
Maurice Andrew Hale (he/him)
Performed by Maurice Andrew Hale (he/him) and Some bird

maurice hale, a 23 year old canadian based in vancouver that likes to experiment with music in ways that make him feel like he's a toddler again, with no pretension other than exploration, experimentation and amusement, using sound as a way to metaphorically tickle other people's ears and brains, is actually the alter ego of brazilian 16 year old joão bresler, who makes stuff in garageband when he's not doing homework.

How did the time limit effect your songwriting?
"didn't affect, i usually don't spend much time on 1 tune"

Did you incorporate the theme of "pinch"?
"i have to say i read finch and thought ooh, gonna use birds in music like cosmo sheldrake, only realised midway through that it was actually pinch"

What's the coolest thing you've ever done in under a minute?
"i have hugged like 18 people in one minute or so, I didn't realise I was late to go with my family to the airport so I rushed to hug my friends before vacation. Hugs are neat"

Any other thoughts?
"I don't know much about mixing so it's a pretty wonky tune, but I had fun making it! ;) "

by Injurious Stim

Runtime: 1:00
Written by
Injurious Stim

when i get out of the bath, who's that standing there?
i believe that it's me
or when i get out of my head, who's that in my bed?
i believe that it's me
or could it be...
could it be someone else?

when i get out of the bath, dripping soaking wet
dripping down into the slime, and the time has been erased
coming in last place

How did the time limit effect your songwriting?
"was gonna write more, but hit the end, and then stopped instead."

What's the coolest thing you've ever done in under a minute?
"gee i don't know... i used to be really good at that thing where you stack cups"

Any other thoughts?
"most of this song was written in the bathroom, in fact!"

by 50'♀

Runtime: 1:00
Written by Rahne Alexander

Rahne Alexander: vocals
Brood x cicadas & frogs: backing vocals

if this is my last chance to speak
will it be some hippie shit about love and kindness
or will i admit to a specific blindness
to the things i am afraid of
and the things am ashamed
or will i speak of joy and gladness
or will i wallow in my sadness
will i swallow my pride
and let my tongue be tamed
what'll it be
if this
is my last
chance to speak

How did the time limit effect your songwriting?
"This song has existed for a long time, maybe 20 years, and I've always thought of it as a fragment that needed to be fleshed out. But it always resisted that fleshing and PINCH provided a pathway for me to finally bring this song to completion. In the summer of 2021 I had also made some field recordings of the Brood X cicadas, which I just adored. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with those recordings, but I think they made a perfect backdrop for this song, because they spend 17 years underground and then come out for a fast and furious bacchanal before they die."

What's the coolest thing you've ever done in under a minute?
"quit my job"

Any other thoughts?
"I was once a prolific mix tape maker, and I was obsessive about filling all available space on the cassette. I mostly dubbed from my own cassette collection on to TDK D-90s, which usually included about 46 minutes of recording time on each side, and I kept a mental catalog of all the songs in my own library that ran just a minute or two — so lots of people got to hear the English Beat's "Click Click" and Meryn Cadell's "Being In Love." This compilation would have been a treasure trove for me in 1990."

by Mike Allison

Runtime: 1:00
Written by Mike Allison
Mike Allison - Keyboard, Acoustic Guitar, Vocals
Mixing & Engineering by Mike Allison

It's easier to sequence when there's no mystery
It's calling out for anvils towards the otherworldly
One - time to do what you do
Two - I prefer that tree
Three - I can see that door
Four - opening more and more
When you rise through parables parades of ghosts thrown off the shore

One, Two, Three, Four

It's easier to sequence when there's no mystery
It's calling out for anvils towards the otherworldly

What's the coolest thing you've ever done in under a minute?

by mothpuppy

Written by Morgan Murphy

Morgan Murphy - Guitar and vocals

Cat on the roof, stalking birds, listening to my song
I think that I scared her because now she’s moving along
I keep trying to write something more beautiful than myself
But it all comes out wrong
I guess the robins can thank me anyway
Yeah they get to live another day
Nature’s finding some use for me after all

How did the time limit effect your songwriting?
"It didn’t really! Only thing I could think of is if I had had more time I might have tried to do more with recording but also I think there was plenty of time I’ve just been really busy lately so that’s on me."

What's the coolest thing you've ever done in under a minute?
"Tell people I love them!"

Any other thoughts?
"Wrote the song while I was watching a cat on the roof next to our house. It felt really therapeutic in the moment and I tried not to think too hard about it. I think the result is pretty peaceful which I can say about a lot of my songs! Thanks for the prompt!"

“you could never imagine what it’s like to be…
to be burned alive, lynched alive - it’s genocide!

but i’ll give you a taste of the agony -
with the pink belt about my waist!” - black, queer, pan-africanist dom

How did the time limit effect your songwriting?
"oh, it was tricky - i had to ask for help, which is a good practice for me!"

Any other thoughts?
"context: sub failed to read resources provided by dom after murder of George Floyd; then, after murder of Donnell Rochester, had the audacity to ask “why is it like this in this country"

Sasha Miles is the greatest person to have recorded this song with; definitely picked up what I couldn’t even articulate"

What's the coolest thing you've ever done in under a minute?
"ohh good question - probably climbed my favorite tree!"
